About Mujeres en Movimiento

Mujeres en Movimiento is an initiative of 8 (former) female transport ministers and vice ministers from Latin America, who came together during the Women Mobilize Women Conference organized by TUMI in Leipzig in May 2018.

The Movement seeks to bring feminine power to the transport, energy and sustainability agenda. Leaders in different areas of mobility, energy and the environment, both from the public and private sectors, united to enhance capacities, knowledge, efforts and competences. Mujeres en Movimiento is committed to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations Organization.

Webseminar Series Gender and Transport

In July 2019, we held our first Webinar on women and transport and have since organised a monthly webinar on these topics. We have recognized through our webinars that mobility is not gender-neutral and that is it indispensable  to include the conpect in all phases of planning. This assertion is widely known and recognized, however, cities still face the challenge of how to address the issue and ground it in real processes.

Women Mobilize Women goes local

The Women Mobilize Women Conference Leipzig was a place of exchange and inspiration for the organizers of the Easten Africa Women in Transportation (EAWIT) conference. As both conferences were aligned in their objectives of empowering women in the transport sector, EAWIT adopted the slogan Women Mobilize Women goes local. The EAWIT conference which took place on 22nd and 23rd of November 2018 in Nairobi, Kenya, was a step in creating a regional network of and for women in the transport sector in Eastern Africa.

Women and Transport Africa conference 2019

We are thrilled by the success of the second annual Women and Transport African Conference! Thank you to all of our esteemed guests, including her Her Excellency Minister Dagmawit Moges, Ministry of Transport. We were joined by presenters from nearly 20 different countries which included women working in transport from around Africa, researchers, entrepreneurs, advocates, government officials and others.

Thank you to everyone who attended and presented!

Public transportation is notoriously unsafe for women, children, people living with disabilities and other vulnerable groups. Together, we must increase the visibility of women in the male dominated field of public transportation to reflect a more equitable and sustainable public transport system for everyone!

About the Eastern Africa Women in Transportation Conference

The first conference on Women in Transport in Eastern Africa focused on the empowerment of women in the informal matatu industry and was organized by the Kenyan women-led Flone Initiative, which has been working on the issue for the last years. By providing a stage to drivers and conductors from the Kenyan Matatu industry, Dala Dalas in Tanzania and other informal transport operators from Uganda, Rwanda and Ethiopia, the conference offered a diversity of views from women on the ground. Users with disabilities were also given the opportunity to share their experience of daily commuting. A theater play performed by Matatu workers was an additional thought-provoking and entertaining element to gain insights into the sector. The conference was organized with the support of TUMI and other international and local organizations. Please visit the conference website to find more detailed information.

First Conference to Empower Women in Transport

The Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI) has kicked-off a debate on the role and potential of women in sustainable urban mobility at the first Women Mobilize Women Conference on 22nd May 2018 in Leipzig. Browse this page to find out about the outcome.

Program

The conference fostered knowledge exchange and in-depth discussions on female empowerment focused on the implementation of sustainable mobility solutions on the ground – by women, for women.

Inspirational talks on female empowerment in the transport sector, background stories on experiences of women specifically in developing and emerging economies and an interactive dialogue session provided the basis for in-depth discussions and networking.

The conference actively involved female change makers from all over the world: all speakers and at least two-thirds of participants were women.
